Biography
Few Kindred embody weary old age like Bjorn - which is surprisingly at odds with his occasional bouts of explosive temper and apparently sourceless, targetless rebellion and aggression. Old enough to remember the rise and fall of many empires before these modern nights, he tends to keep away from the doings of the Camarilla court unless his position requires him to attend, preferring to spend his nights slumming with his clanmates at Purgatory or wandering the streets, taking in the state of things. There may be little call, these nights, for the berserker warrior training of his youth, but its memory is always there, just below the surface, and can be glimpsed by unlucky Kindred who anger him too thoroughly.
Mortal Life
In life, Bjorn was an Icelandic farmer who participated in raids against various other homesteads and strongholds in order to supplement the meager living his family could eke out in the cold northern lands - in other words, a Viking. He learned combat at a tender young age and by the time he was in his thirties was a major jarl, with several shield-brothers under his command, a wife administering a thriving homestead, and enough ships to make his raids in style and return home victorious without too much opposition.
Bjorn was deeply religious and dedicated to the cult of Odinn, ancient god of wisdom and of the battle fury that descended upon his berserkers and gave them the power to triumph on the field of battle. He made regular sacrifices of blood and animals to his patron god, and reached middle adulthood a powerful and intimidating figure because of it, one that many other little warlords in the area actively avoided clashing with in fear of his possible retribution.
Embrace
When he was in his forties - an advanced age for the time and his occupation, although he was still vital and strong enough that none of his unruly sons had yet seriously begun to think about overthrowing him - Bjorn encountered a strange creature in the woods, a woman with long, matted hair, raven's feathers in her cloak and hair, and a pale, watery stare that seemed to pierce directly through him. When he challenged her for trespassing on his lands, she pronounced a prophecy upon him: that he would die but never know true death, and that the true test of his strength would lie many years in his future.
Angered, Bjorn attempted to capture the woman, but she turned on him with a frightening and ferocious speed; she was Kindred, and Embraced him forcibly in spite of all his struggles and warlike training. When she left him, returning into the snowy forests as serenely as she had come from them, he realized that she must have been a messenger from Odinn himself, and that the curse now levied upon him was vengeance for his failure to recognize her and pay the proper respect.
Conflict with the Ventrue
Bjorn was successful in managing his condition for a few years, but in the twelfth century, vampire society came to destroy him regardless. A major invasion of Christian troops intent on conquering and converting the area, spearheaded by the attempts of Clan Ventrue to increase their control over the northernmost lands of Europe, decimated much of the native religion and peoples, and Bjorn, like many other Vikings, was run out of his own territory by fire and swords where once he would have reigned supreme.
Chased by Ventrue and Toreador troops bent on destroying him if he would not submit to them, Bjorn fled to his ships and managed to pilot a small craft all the way across the Atlantic, although he was forced to devour his crewmates in order to arrive intact and conscious. Ravenous and all but spent, he landed in the area that would someday become New England, and just barely managed to bury himself in the ground for safety before entering torpor.
Activity in the New World
The American Revolutionary War awakened Bjorn entirely by accident, when farmsteaders seeking a new plot of land away from the fighting accidentally dug him up and were promptly eaten for their troubles. Recognizing the war as one against many of the old European vampire powers that he now hated, Bjorn fought for the American revolutionaries and was instrumental in winning some battles, although they tended to be the less talked-about sort that soldiers only mentioned in drunken mutters on late nights.
For the next few centuries, Bjorn traveled the country in order to continue to fulfill his destiny as a warrior, hoping to win back the favor of his long-ago patron god; he participated in the Mexican-American war, in various skirmishes against native American peoples, and the short-lived War of 1812, which forced him to fight alongside the hated Ventrue in order to prevent the Sabbat from extending too much influence over the east coast. He eventually settled in DC, where he could monitor national policy and sometimes deploy to fight in combat zones, although newer and more sophisticated methods of authenticating soldiers' identities have slowly begun to prevent him from enlisting, much to his aggravation.
Activity in Washington, DC
Bjorn founded Purgatory more out of a desire to have a place for malcontents like himself to gather and vent their feelings about the other Camarilla clans than out of any attempt at legitimate business success. The frequent parties and rants there have been nice distractions, but although he has spent years as an instrumental part of the city's defense forces against Sabbat and other dangers, he still hopes for a day when he can directly act against those who, in his opinion, most deserve it.
