Chas is the youngest of Washington, DC's Primogen Council, but what he lacks in age he makes up for in influence and determination. Handsome and commanding, he has been called the "Golden Lion" and the "Elfin King" of Washington, DC's nightlife, and is in high demand as a political ally as well as a musical performer and conversational partner. His passionate opinions on various subjects - the most noticeable a staunch belief that the Toreador should be in power in DC, not the Lasombra or Ventrue - sometimes garner him a little too much negative attention, but he is always able to smooth it over with a golden smile and a chaste kiss on the cheek.

Chas has become a regular patron of most of the city's Elysia, where he enjoys the court atmosphere, and of Limbo, where he is always glad to take in a performance and on occasion even graces the audience with one of his own. Although influential in low-level bureaucratic and law enforcement circles throughout the city, his resources seem to remain in line with Prince Vitel's, and his support is therefore assumed by most who do not have the means to talk to him about it directly.

Mortal Life

Chas was born in the early 1900s and showed promise early on in his life as a versatile and gifted musical prodigy, picking up a wide variety of instruments as well as cultivating a beautiful voice that only became better with time and maturity. His family was not particularly wealthy, having lost most of their assets in the stock market crash when he was only a baby, but they were well off enough that he was able to see a few musical performances and realize that this could be a career for him if he could only figure out how to pursue it.

Determined not to end up a shopkeep or street-cleaner, Chas performed several odd jobs in order to have the money to engage a music teacher, as much for the contacts as for instruction on his already considerable genius, and spent several years hopping between instructors as he honed his talents.

Embrace

Eventually, one of Chas' teachers turned out to be Kindred - a Toreador pianist who was impressed by his talent (not to mention his golden good looks) and interested in cultivating him. After secretly making him into a ghoul, she gave him an extensive education in classical music, and finally decided that it would be worthwhile to groom him to be her own successor.

Aware that she could move to nearby Baltimore and take over a vacuum of power that had left the Harpy position there vacant, Chas' sire Embraced him a few years in and instructed him to take her place as entertainer and teacher to the local members of the clan. Although initially nonplussed by this derailing of his ambitions, Chas soon came to love his new role; not only was he now able to perform for the most influential and important of audiences, he could also reach for power and prestige that he could never have attained as a mere mortal.

Recurring Visions

By the mid 1990s, Chas had begun to suffer from strange visions and dreams, plaguing the daylight hours when he slept but vanishing half-remembered as soon as he awoke. Over time, he began to believe that these must be sent by some inspirational power, although he could not guess what, and that they acted as a muse for his own talents. He further noticed that his own performances were always at their best when he was in the throes of such a vision or had recently had one, although much to his annoyance he could never find a way to intentionally trigger one for performance purposes.

In pursuit of understanding the phenomenon better, Chas began trading Boons to other, more knowledgeable Kindred and performing his own research, seeking any possible source for the strange artistic visions, and eventually came to the conclusion that there might be some influence from the rare realms of the Changelings in the area. He was unable to prove these suspicions, however, and hid his conclusions from all others, determined that if he did find proof, the strange, shimmering power would belong to him alone.

Sire's Death

All was well for Chas, who was content to enjoy his role and not reach too far beyond it, until his sire was murdered, barely a city away, by an incursion from a local Sabbat pack. This was tragic enough, but his informants whispered to him that she might have been betrayed by a member of the local Tremere chantry, although who remained unknown. Furious that the Tremere would dare act against one of the Toreador in this way, he immediately dedicated his resources to undermining the chantry's power wherever possible, all while maintaining a facade of friendship and cooperation in public.
