Maps.png SceneSummaries.png Timelines.png

Theme

The themes of Stockholm by Night revolve around the martial conflicts and aspirations of the only major domain in Sweden, where the expansionist Viking elders in residence have given up none of their ancient dreams.

Themes explored in this game include:

Gone but Not Forgotten

The modern world is only one destruction
of an ancient place of many beliefs:
the decay of time is the greatest assassin.
Characters grapple with belief systems and ancient rituals that not only don't fit the modern day but may trap them in terrors of the past.
Old Grudges

At the heart of all anger, all grudges, all resentment
is a creature of fear
afraid of being discovered too soon.
Characters must confront feuds between families, clans, and peoples that stretch back centuries and may be too deeply entrenched to escape or change.

Plot

The Domain of Stockholm, Sweden, under the control of the Brujah Prince Ivar Ragnarsson, is the central location and power bloc around which events of the game revolve.

Politics

Stockholm is a middling-old but surprisingly stagnant city, one that has seen very little change from its foundation under the Prince until the modern day, when he still holds sway, now with his large brood of childer instead of the loyal Viking retainers of yore. In practice the Domain includes all of the country of Sweden, sparsely populated with vampires to begin with, and as a result its Prince is able to use it as a powerful bargaining chip, achieving a truce with the Ventrue Domain of London and an alliance with the Toreador city of Paris via an arranged marriage between him and the elder Anne d'Arpajon.

As in days of old, Ivar is a conqueror and seeks to expand his Domain, looking to a campaign to rout the Sabbat forces currently occupying territory in Greenland and Canada and hold it for himself, claiming that it was long ago ceded to him when Viking invaders arrived in the Americas before the rest of Europe. With support from Clan Giovanni and New York by way of its Ventrue Primogen Marcus Aurelius, the already oversized city is in a constant state of hoping to sieze new territory and become ever more dangerous and powerful.

Social & Supernatural Plots

Social plots are complex and often rely on the established alliances and relationships among the vampires in residence. Among other things, the Prince's ancient religion and superstitious reliance on omens and portents has led to the development of the House of Ivar as a religious cult following ancient and bloody traditions that consider the Prince a living god on earth, the Brujah power bloc is threatened by its members developing relationships with others and leaving the city, and the impending alliance with Paris has caused a number of broken hearts in the love triangle between the Prince, his fiancee, and his childe Casper Iversson. Undiscovered links between the vampires of Stockholm and those of Washington, DC in the United States continue to draw those involved into one anothers' orbits, often without even realizing it.

Although much of Ivar's reliance on his ancient religion is based in delusion, it is undeniable that seers have seen visions of the future in his domain, filld with symbols and signifiers of some great coming upheaval, and monsters in the form of Tzimisce war incursions and ancient Troll barrows have begun to make themselves known more strenuously than in the past.
